Amendment 6 in the name of the noble Lord, Lord Callanan, would require us to renegotiate the treaty and insert a provision that it could be extended, after 99 years, only on the same terms as it now exists or on terms that would be more favourable to the British. I do not know much about Mauritius but I would have thought that no Government in any country could agree that a treaty could be changed only on terms that would be less advantageous to them. It seems to me that an absurd proposition is being put forward here.
