Yet, the Government—should they choose not to accept the amendment from the noble Baroness, Lady Foster—will have deliberately snubbed the Chagossian people and consigned them to a status of citizenship that is second class to that of other overseas territories. We should remind ourselves that British sovereignty owes much to the Chagossian people. Their community has experienced unimaginable hardship and betrayal since their forcible removal from the islands all those years ago. Successive Governments acknowledged this travesty, though seemingly, the current Government have not learned from it.
