The treaty is clear that it represents full and final settlement of all claims by Mauritius. In relation to the Chagossians, the English courts and the European Court of Human Rights have both concluded that the claims of Chagossians in relation to their removal from the archipelago have been definitively settled through the payments made under the 1982 settlement. This and successive Governments have made it clear that there is no basis for any further claim for reparations or compensation. Separate to the treaty, the UK Government will continue to support Chagossians living in the UK, including support for newly arrived British citizens and a wide range of projects that will benefit the Chagossian community. In this context, the Government will not be accepting Amendments 11, 45, 46, 52 or 53 on the management of the trust fund and other financial issues relating to Chagossians.
