Debate

Diego Garcia Military Base and British Indian Ocean Territory Bill

Contribution

The point made by the noble Earl and one or two of his colleagues made me feel as though I was back in the other place, being shouted at about it—“Well, they would say that, wouldn’t they?” The Government’s perspective on this is that we have a treaty, we have secured the security of Diego Garcia and we are pleased that our international allies have come out in support of that. We regard the noble Earl’s amendment as unnecessary because our AUKUS partners—Australia and the US—have already expressed support for the treaty and the security arrangements.
