Medical professionals who suggest a “do not resuscitate order” because they do not understand the value of someone’s life, and who make judgments about the quality of that life, may cause people to think that they should die. They may plant the seed that death is the only real alternative. A person in hospital or receiving care may be subject to pressure through the communication of the fact that the person is, for example, blocking a bed because no suitable care package can be provided for reasons entirely outside the control of the terminally ill individual, just as DNR notices were used during Covid, and continue to be encouraged simply because of age, or indeed disability. A person in such a situation is doubly vulnerable.
