Indeed, my noble friend Lord Pannick showed a surprising and esoteric confidence in human nature, which I do not share—but I am the nasty sort of lawyer who has been going around the criminal courts for over half a century. I have always said to the young people I have mentored, which I suppose is the posh word for it, “Never be surprised by anything you hear in a courtroom”, because, to quote a newspaper that now no longer exists, all human life is there—and some of it is, I am afraid, very bad.
