Professor Jane Monckton-Smith has warned that coercive control is rarely overt; it can be financial, emotional or relational. In the year between April 2022 and April 2023, there were 242 deaths in domestic abuse cases. Many victims do not see themselves as a victim or will not or cannot admit to being abused. Autonomy is not exercised in a vacuum; it depends on the protections of those who may be too weary or frightened to speak for themselves.
