Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill

Contribution

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in March 2024 highlighted the issues that disabled people face in the UK at the moment and said that the UK demonises disabled people. At a time when hospices are being cut, the challenges are more than ever before. Disabled women are significantly more likely to report experience of each form of intimate partner violence measured, which includes rape, sexual violence other than rape, physical violence, stalking, psychological aggression and control of reproductive or sexual health. Disabled women are twice as likely to experience abuse than non-disabled women, and disabled people are more likely to experience abuse from an adult family member compared to non-disabled people. Nationally, only 3.9% of referrals were for disabled victims, which, based on per capita population, you would imagine to be as high as 16%.
