More than that, we know that domestic abuse and violence are directly linked to suicide. In the year to March 2024, there were 98 suicides that were linked to abusive relationships: 98 people, overwhelmingly women, who took their own lives as a result of the nature of the domestic violence and abuse—the coercive and controlling behaviour—to which they were subject. We know from the testimony of survivors of such relationships—these are people who have been subject to non-violent domestic abuse—that 47% of them have considered taking their own life.
