The Suicide Act 1961 is crystal clear that encouraging a person to commit suicide is an offence, whether or not they take their own life in the end. My noble friends Lord Evans and Lord Gove cited parallel provisions in other statutes. Against that background, it seems to me that the Bill is about people making independent decisions about their own lives. It was for that reason that I queried whether the noble Baroness’s amendment was strictly necessary.
