Motion Text

That this House celebrates 10 years since the City of Edinburgh Council began implementing its 20mph speed limit scheme under the Leadership of Councillor Lesley Hinds; notes that the programme, initiated in 2016, was one of the first city-wide speed-reduction initiatives in the UK and has since become a model for other local authorities; recognises the scheme’s contribution to improved road safety, including reductions in serious injuries and lives lost, and its role in creating more liveable streets for pedestrians, cyclists and families; further notes that peer reviewed research published in 2022 and 2024 revealed that fatalities and serious injuries fell significantly following the implementation of the scheme; acknowledges the positive impact on public health, active travel, and community wellbeing; commends the council staff, campaigners, and local residents whose sustained efforts helped deliver and embed the scheme; and encourages continued support for measures that make urban environments safer, healthier, and more accessible for all.
