50TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Motion Text

That this House welcomes the passage of the Human Rights Bill which received Royal Assent on 9th November; notes that this was just one month short of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948; remembers with gratitude the work of the architects of the Universal Declaration and the improvement it has made to people's lives around the world; further notes that the need to protect fundamental human rights is as important today as it was 50 years ago, as demonstrated by the current situation in Kosovo; and calls upon the government to continue to promote the aims of values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the new Human Rights Bill and to work with their partners in Europe to ensure that human rights are upheld around the world.
