BARRATT HOMES AND NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSITS

Motion Text

That this House strongly condemns the action of Barratt Homes Limited in retaining ú18,000 in non-refundable deposits from prospective home-buyers at the Chamberlayne Walk development at Preston Road in Brent North without advising them that they themselves had no legally registered title to the land and that this would make it impossible to secure a mortgage on the property, thereby forfeiting the deposit; regards such sharp practice as contrary to the basic principles laid down in Section 110 of the Land Registry Act 1925, and as a scam perpetrated on people who paid deposits in good faith; and urges Barratt Homes to refund the deposits forthwith.
