Diagnosis of neurodevelopmental conditions in women and girls

That this House recognises that many women and girls receive diagnoses of neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and ADHD, significantly later than boys and men; notes evidence that differences in presentation, masking behaviours and historical diagnostic criteria have contributed to missed or delayed diagnoses; further notes that late diagnosis is associated with increased risks of anxiety, depression, eating disorders and social isolation; acknowledges the experiences of women who have struggled for years without appropriate understanding or support; further recognises the important work of clinicians, researchers, charities and advocacy organisations seeking to improve recognition of neurodivergence in women and girls; calls on the Government to improve data collection on gender differences in diagnosis; urges increased training for clinicians and educators on gender-specific presentations; and further calls for improved access to timely assessments and appropriate post-diagnostic support for women and girls diagnosed later in life.
