MARRIAGE IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Motion Text

That this House notes that it is now more than two years since the collapse of the Northern Ireland Assembly; regrettably recognises that there is no prospect of restoration of the devolved legislature and executive in Northern Ireland in the near future; is concerned at the continuing discrimination against same-sex couples in Northern Ireland who are denied the chance to marry the person they love; notes that polls show that a majority of people in Northern Ireland are in favour of same-sex marriage; further notes that a majority of Members of the Legislative Assembly voted in favour of marriage equality the last time the matter was voted on in the Northern Ireland Assembly; believes that all couples in all parts of the United Kingdom should have the same right to marry the person they love; and therefore calls on the Government to bring forward, as a matter of urgency, legislation at Westminster to give same-sex couples in Northern Ireland the ability to marry.
