PUBLIC DEBATE ON TRIDENT REPLACEMENT

Motion Text

That this House believes there should be the fullest possible public debate on any replacement for the Trident nuclear submarine system; notes that the Government is in discussion with the US Administration on a possible successor to Trident which could cost up to £15 billion; further believes that, in the spirit of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the need to reduce tension around the world, an open and public debate is necessary which should include a non-nuclear defence policy; and calls upon the Government not to conclude any agreements with the United States, or to engage in preparations to build a new generation of nuclear weapons, until after this debate and a clear decision made in Parliament.
