RACISM IN CRICKET

Motion Text

That this House welcomes the Anyone for Cricket report produced by the Centre of Sport Development Research at Roehampton Institute; notes the report's findings that 'two separate but unequal cricket cultures' exist in Essex and East London, as in other areas of the country; notes the report's conclusion that there is a 'culture of racial exclusion, racial stereotyping and to a lesser extent racial abuse of black and Asian cricket players'; notes that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has welcomed the report; calls on the ECB to respond positively to the demands raised by Hit Racism for Six, the campaign against racism in cricket, including convening a national forum of all those involved with black and Asian cricket, drawing up a development plan for cricket in the inner cities and among disadvantaged populations and adopting and promoting an anti-racist charter; and believes black and Asian cricketers have a major contribution to make to cricket in Britain, and that the cricket authorities should grant them 'recognition, respect and resources', the 3 Rs of cricket development.
