STATE OF EMERGENCY IN NEPAL

Motion Text

That this House is deeply concerned by the imposition of a state of emergency by King Gyanendra in Nepal and the suspension of most civil rights within the country on 1st February; notes that the conflict is likely to degenerate further if democratic forces within the country and those who have been forced to leave, including politicians, journalists, trade union representatives, human rights activists and representatives of the Dalits and other minority communities, continue to be persecuted by the Nepalese security forces and are not supported by the international community and if all those committing atrocities against civilians are not held to account for their crimes; congratulates the UK Government for its condemnation of the current situation in Nepal and its suspension of military aid to the country; and calls upon it to support the UN Human Rights Commission at its next session in adopting a resolution condemning both sides of the conflict, appointing a Special Rapporteur to monitor human rights in Nepal, and increasing the monitoring capacity of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal.
