TROPHY HUNTING

Motion Text

That this House deplores the activity of trophy hunting endangered animals; notes that, for the Government to issue import licences for trophies from animals listed in Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), it must be satisfied that the profits from trophy hunting are used for the purposes of conservation of the endangered species; further notes that a recent League Against Cruel Sports investigation exposed a UK travel firm admitting that 90 per cent. of the trophy fees paid by the UK hunters do not go to conservation efforts; and calls on the Government to suspend all imports of hunting trophies from CITES Appendix I listed species including the cheetah, leopard and rhinoceros.
