UN resolutions on slavery reparations

Motion Text

That this House regrets the Government’s decision to abstain on the recent United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/80/L.48 rather than vote against it; recognises the suffering caused by the transatlantic slave trade; further recognises the historic efforts of the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron in helping to suppress and end the transatlantic slave trade; affirms the United Kingdom’s commitment to remembrance, education, and the eradication of modern slavery; reiterates that there is no legal basis for reparations for historical slavery under international law; believes it would be inappropriate to impose financial liability on present-day citizens for actions of past generations; and calls on the Government to vote against any future United Nations resolutions seeking to establish or imply such reparations.
