VISIT BY MAYOR AKIBA OF HIROSHIMA

Motion Text

That this House recalls the advisory opinion delivered by the United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 8th July 1996 that the use or threatened use of nuclear weapons is illegal in international law; welcomes the visit by Dr Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima, to this House on 3rd July to mark the 10th anniversary of the ICJ advisory opinion; and urges the Government to signal its commitment to fulfil its nuclear disarmament obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by not proceeding with any proposal to replace the Trident nuclear submarine system.
