Cancel School When Temperatures Reach 30°C in Schools Without Air Conditioning
Background
Students should not be expected to learn in classrooms that reach 30°C or higher without air conditioning. Extreme heat reduces concentration, lowers academic performance, and increases the risk of heat-related illness. Schools should close or move lessons online when these temperatures are reached.
Additional details
Many schools do not have air conditioning, leaving students and staff to work in classrooms that can reach 30°C. Research shows that high temperatures reduce concentration, memory, and learning performance, making it difficult for students to work effectively. Extreme heat can also increase the risk of dehydration, headaches, dizziness, and heat stroke. Schools should have a clear policy requiring closure or remote learning when classroom temperatures reach 30°C in non-air-conditioned schools
