Background

Invest in wave-powered desalination systems. With around 300 million people worldwide relying on water desalination for fresh water, we believe the Government could harness wave power and turn seawater into fresh water, providing an energy-secure, scalable solution to water scarcity.

Additional details

In Canada, there are already start-ups which produce wave-powered buoys that turn seawater into drinking water without electricity or fuel. The Government has planned to build 9 new reservoirs by 2050 and 9 new desalination plants in England from 2040 but it has received opposition in the southwest due to cost and environmental impact concerns. We believe wave-powered desalination offers a sustainable water source. The Government should therefore invest in wave-powered desalination to tackle water shortages.
