Background

We want redundancy law changed so employers must give at least 3 months’ formal warning when redundancies are being seriously considered, before dismissal. Employers should explain general business reasons and impact, without sensitive info, giving time to find work, retrain and prepare financially.

Additional details

Redundancy can leave people facing a sudden loss of income with little time to find another job or prepare financially. Current rules do not always give employees enough warning, particularly where fewer than 20 people are affected. A three-month early warning period would give employees time to look for work, attend interviews, retrain and plan their finances, while still allowing businesses to restructure when necessary. Employees deserve time to protect their financial security too.
