Introduce guidance on provision or adaptation of stoma-friendly toilets

Background

Over 200,000 people live with a stoma in the UK, yet public toilets do not meet their needs. Many face stigma or are challenged when using disabled toilets. People with stomas need safe, hygienic facilities to manage their condition with dignity.

We call on the UK Government to issue robust guidance to ensure greater provision of stoma-friendly toilet facilities. Where new facilities are not possible, existing disabled toilets could be adapted with shelves, appropriate waste bins, accessible sinks, and sufficient space. Current facilities are often unsuitable and unreliable for safe ostomy care. Countries such as Japan already provide better support. Strong national guidance is needed to ensure consistent provision and dignity for people with stomas.
