Reinstate Ofsted nannies for the Student Finance Childcare Grant

Background

We ask the Government to reverse the decision to exclude Ofsted-registered nannies from the Student Finance England Childcare Grant and reinstate them as eligible childcare providers, including protection for existing student families affected by the August 2026 rule change.

Additional details

From August 2026, student parents can no longer generally use the Childcare Grant for Ofsted-registered nannies. This affects parents, including student nurses and midwives, who need childcare for night, weekend and irregular placements when nurseries or childminders may be unavailable. Older children may also need suitable home-based care. Registered nannies have invested in Ofsted requirements, training, DBS checks, first aid and insurance, yet now risk losing their livelihoods.
