Require Delay Repay to be automatic for online train ticket purchases

Background

Require all UK train operators and ticket retailers to automatically assess eligibility for Delay Repay compensation and issue payments directly to passengers who purchased tickets online, without the need for a separate claim.

Additional details

Train operators already know when trains are delayed and, for online ticket purchases, often know who is entitled to compensation. Yet passengers must usually submit a separate Delay Repay claim, meaning many miss out on money they are owed. The Government should require train operators and ticket retailers to automatically assess eligibility and pay Delay Repay compensation directly to passengers wherever journey data makes this possible.
