Require replacement of swimming pools and gyms lost via major development

Background

We call on the Government to strengthen national planning policy so that where major development results in the loss of an existing swimming pool, gym or comparable indoor leisure facility, planning permission should require equivalent replacement leisure capacity.

Swimming pools and indoor gyms are vital community leisure facilities. We want the Government to strengthen planning policy so that when major development removes an existing swimming pool or gym, genuinely equivalent replacement capacity is required. Recent redevelopments show why this is needed: gyms and swimming pools are being lost, while proposed green space, outdoor exercise facilities and compensation do not provide equivalent indoor leisure provision.
