Review conventions relating to MPs’ dress in the Commons Chamber

Background

Electoral law allows candidates to stand under a commonly used name. However, Commons rules by convention require business-like attire, with guidance issued and enforced by the Speaker. Consequently, a Member elected in character might not be able to sit in the attire they campaigned in.

Additional details

The House should review conventions relating to dress. We urge the House to refer the matter to the Procedure Committee or pass a resolution permitting attire worn by candidates in election campaigns in the Chamber if identity can be verified for the oath, voting, and security.
