Suspend Climate Change Act targets & undertake a full national impact assessment

Background

We call on the Government to temporarily suspend the legal duties to meet the UK's statutory carbon budgets and 2050 Net Zero target under the Climate Change Act 2008 until Parliament has considered an independent national assessment of their full costs and impacts.

Additional details

The Climate Change Act targets affect policy on energy, transport, heating, industry and land use. The assessment should quantify public and private costs; impacts on bills, fuel poverty, industry, food and energy security; and land and infrastructure required for solar, wind, networks, sub-stations and storage. It should assess peatland, landscapes and rising electricity demand from data centres. The findings should inform Parliament's decision on whether the targets should continue unchanged.
