Planning and Infrastructure Bill

Contribution

My Lords, I will keep my remarks brief, as we had a constructive discussion of these matters previously in Committee, but the amendments speak to the ongoing concerns about the environmental implications of EDPs. We keep coming up against this: we are just not convinced that the protections will be there. I very much welcome this group of amendments, tabled by my noble friend Lord Trenchard and the noble Earl, Lord Russell. They speak to a shared understanding across the Committee that certain natural assets, such as chalk streams and blanket bogs, deserve particular attention in our planning system. As has rightly been said, chalk streams are globally rare and ecologically significant. Their protection is a matter not of sentiment but of strategic environmental importance. These amendments rightly seek to ensure that such assets are not overlooked in the name of progress. Developments and environmental protection can and must go hand in hand, and planning frameworks should reflect that balance. I will bring my remarks to a close there and look forward to the Minister’s response.
