Sporting Events Bill [Lords]Contribution
Such events are unique, by their nature—often, they are once in a generation. Indeed, the reason we have the Bill is the unique nature of the events. If they happened year in, year out, we would have a very different Bill. It concerns a rugby world cup, a football Euros, an Olympics. By their nature, they do not come around all the time. It is farcical for the Government to maintain the premise that normal industrial relations would be constrained by preventing strike action during events that are so out of the ordinary. That is not in the nature of routine industrial actions, yet that appeared to be the Government’s case in the House of Lords.
