Sporting Events Bill [Lords]Contribution
We have consensus on the Bill. The Government have a lot of support for attracting sporting events to the UK. We have had sensible suggestions from the Lords, and two modest amendments tabled by the Opposition. That is why I say it is an interesting case study of whether the Chamber is simply somewhere people come and read out a speech that someone else may have written, or has even been generated by AI, with their head down, reading it out without taking interventions. Have we ceased to be a debating Chamber? Is that really where debates in this place are going? [Interruption.] I am happy to take an intervention if the Under-Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the hon. Member for Barnsley South (Stephanie Peacock), wishes to intervene on that point. Or will the House scrutinise legislation and make modest amendments, which would simply apply the existing law and ensure that if taxpayers’ money is used to host a sporting event, it is not hijacked by entirely separate industrial action?
