Northern Ireland Troubles Bill

Contribution

I will conclude with a broader appeal to the Government. The Secretary of State is right to recognise the concerns of former service personnel, but reconciliation cannot be achieved by providing reassurance to veterans if the consequence is to deepen the mistrust of victims’ families and communities who have long questioned the actions of the state. Nor should we overlook how carefully the Good Friday agreement and its subsequent reforms sought to address the historical causes of that mistrust, including through the independence of criminal justice institutions.
